Expropriation is a power granted to public bodies to acquire privately owned land without the consent of the owner for the fulfillment of a public purpose, such as the construction of public infrastructure. In Ontario, the statute governing expropriation is the Expropriations Act. The Act prescribes the process for the compulsory acquisition of land by authorities as well as the rights and entitlements of expropriated landowners.
